An increasing number of practitioners are seeking the assistance of a coach to guide their progress to grow their clinics. Coaching is one of the key approaches through which leadership and communication skills can be developed and is a method of developing an individual's capabilities to facilitate success. This one to one focused and bespoke relationship is often perceived as the single most effective development intervention that a senior leader in the NHS can access.
How does coaching work?
- The relationship has a set duration
- It is structured with regular scheduled meetings
- Short term and focussed on specific development areas, issues, goals and work
- Your coach does not need direct experience of your role
A coach provides assistance in a number of key areas:
- Serving as a catalyst for change, helping you achieve specific targets.
- Helping you highlight and overcome specific challenges with problem-solving techniques.
- Acting as a facilitator to identify and prioritise tasks to stay on track.
- Working with you to identify areas of development, helping to set agendas and create a positive climate for change.
- Using past experience and knowledge of external resources and tools to help save your practice time and money.
- Acting as a sounding board, enabling you to remain focused on the task in hand.
Do you know what a coach is? It sounds a bit odd when I first explain it. We’re often described as “the catalyst for change”. A more technical explanation is that “coaching is the art of facilitating the development, learning and performance of another” (The School of Coaching) What sets us apart from all the mentors and consultants out there is that we help you achieve your goals without telling you what to do. That’s it. No instruction. No “I know best”. No do as I do.
We have to find what works for you.
There’s no possible way I can tell you exactly what will work for you in your clinic. I’m not so arrogant to think that I know the solution that will work for you when we might not have even met yet! I believe that only you know the right solution for you.
I believe that patients nowadays are getting wise to marketing ploys, sales funnels and pitches, so the days of being able to use a protocol you’ve been taught to guarantee your patient numbers are long gone. We’re in a new and exciting age of patient-centred care and alongside that, we need to run patient-centred practices which truly focus on the individual in front of us. By extension, you then need a clinic and an approach to practice which is as fluid as you.
Why work with a coach
Chiropractors not only have to be talented practitioners, but also in many cases, talented businesspeople as well. Now unless you also have a degree in business management (in which case, what do you need me for?) you’ve probably recognised that trying to be a jack of all trades is virtually impossible.
As your coach, I can help you determine the way forward through the brain fog that can often surround the day-to-day life of a chiropractor. If you’re bogged down in patient notes, how can you possibly update your website, respond to social media queries, create resources for patients and do all the 101 other things that are on your to-do list?
Working with me, you’ll learn how to prioritise your day and time, and identify the big goals that really matter to you- and importantly, we’ll put in place steps that will help you get there.
What I don’t do
I’m not your guru (sorry, Tony Robbins, and thanks for the turn of phrase there). I’m not going to tell you there’s a system, script, protocol or technique out there that will miraculously maximise your business. I don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all approach to running a business, and your business has to sit well with your values in order for you to love what you do. If you love what you do, the rest is easy. So if the idea of paying thousands of pounds for a generic programme that’s also flogged to thousands of others around the world leaves you cold, I’m your woman. (Just on a side note- if thousands of other people also know what you know and do what you do, what makes your business different?)
I’m a proud gay, female, entrepreneur, married to the woman of my dreams who also happens to be a pretty sh*t-hot chiropractor. We run an evidence-based chiropractic and multidisciplinary healthcare practice in Emsworth on the south coast of England. (Note the EBP part of that sentence- if you’re wellness based, I’m afraid I’m not the coach for you but there are hundreds out there who would be delighted to work with you). Before I became practice manager at the clinic, I ran my own marketing and PR agency working with a range of national and international clients, and I have a BA Hons in Events Management and Journalism.
How did we get here?
We grew our little acorn clinic from humble beginnings- my wife working alone, renting a room in a larger premises to taking over our own building and creating a multidisciplinary clinic with over 16 practitioners and four national awards in just 3 years. It was through coaching with me that Philippa came to realise how dissatisfied she was working as a 40:60 percentage associate for another clinic, and how she had bigger dreams than that. Together, we were able to put together the plans to build the clinic of our dreams, and in January 2016, we did it. If you’re a figures person, we tripled our turnover at our new clinic in year one, and are on track to do the same again in year two. But (see above) if you think I’m going to tell you how we did that, you’d be wrong - I’m more interested in hearing what your ideal clinic looks like.
